News With A Future Spin 📖

Why Is Booz Allen Renting Us Back Our Own National Parks? Perhaps a counterpoint to Kremer’s ideas, above. Here’s what can happen when governments, under the guise of creating convenience or innovation, invest in programs that don’t really make sense. Read Matt Stoller’s piece here.

Private Little Hell. This story in the Chronicle of Higher Education by Emma Pettit about gay purges in Florida 60 years ago is a reminder of how witch hunts happen, and the devastation they cause. Read the story here.

A Washington Post story that followed the Times of Entrepreneurship’s reporting on agriculture businesses in Vermont. Coincidence? We don’t think so. Read more here.

Living the dream💭

Buzzworthy:

The new job hunting strategy, according to LinkedIn, is applying for jobs you have no intention of taking to leverage your current boss into giving you a raise. If you’re a boss or a business owner, this is a word to the wise: What happens over time is that your longest-term employees, who are often the most valuable, end up underpaid because they haven’t been out in the market. Employees using this aggressive technique are acting rationally to get to a fair payment. The CEO of a Midwestern coffee chain talked to Times of E founder Elizabeth MacBride about this phenomenon last spring, and how to prevent it. Read more here.

Bonus Buzzworthy:

A group of former Peacecorps volunteers is raising money for an electric generator for the town in Ukraine where they worked. “Hello, we are a group of returned Peace Corps volunteers who served in Ukraine. In March of 2022, the village where we completed our training, Kyinka, was heavily bombed by Russian forces. With winter approaching and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure crippled by the war, Kyinka desperately needs secure electricity and heat.” Here’s the link to the GoFundMe campaign.

Best Practices: How To Pronounce Qatar

How To Pronounce Qatar: TLDR for Americans from The New York Times: Qatar, kind of like rhyming with guitar, but farther back in your throat. You could do worse.

A Time-Saving iPhone Hack
Your probably use the volume-power buttons together to take a screen shot on your phone. To save a full page in Safari, open the web link, take a screenshot, and at the top of the screen you will see an option to save the screen or the full fage. Select full page, then done, and then save the PDF to files.

Open files to read it later.

Rathskellar💭

A Time-Saving Hack
One Place To Go: Reynir Indahl, the CEO of widely respected Summa Equity – a Nordic private equity firm that focuses on, among other things, resource efficient – recommended a sustainable safari company called Usangu Expedition Camp in Tanzania. Safaris that aren’t exploitative are rare, but Indahl’s recommendation is worthwhile.
Holiday Gifts: They’re not made in America, but shop for holiday gifts at UNHCR, the United Nations’ refugee agency. It’s a hard winter for people all over the world this year.
